Why Mending Rebellion? ❤️🔥
👉 The clothing industry produces over 92 million tons of textile waste annually. In Finland, only 22 percent of the discarded textiles are reused or recycled as materials. Approximately 60% are incinerated.
👉 Ultra-fast fashion chain Shein’s online store receives around 2,500-6,000 new products every day. Orders from China to Finland have increased explosively. Ultra-fast fashion is also an immediate threat to the environment and the realization of human rights.
👉 The VAT on repair services is currently 25.5%. Price is one of the main barriers to using repair services.
The Mending Rebellion is a civic event organized by associations, repair entrepreneurs and private individuals, aiming to promote a repair-friendly lifestyle and society, and to lower the threshold for repairing objects by sharing knowledge and skills.
The Mending Rebellion highlights the repair culture and repair actors. In the demonstration, we gather to repair objects that are important to us and to challenge unsustainable consumption norms. We demand that decision-makers take action to stop disposable culture, fast fashion and overconsumption.
🚫 The Finnish government should prevent the operations and marketing of ultra-fast fashion companies.
♻️ The recycling of textile waste should be made more efficient. Currently, most textile waste is not recycled but incinerated.
💡 VAT on repair services must be reduced. This would have both employment-enhancing and stimulating effects on the use of repair services.
🌍 Sustainability and reparability must be taken into account in production. Production chains must be transparent, ethical and fair.
❕ The EU directive on the right to repair and corporate liability should be implemented to a large extent also in Finnish legislation.
