Do you have old phones, GPS devices or digital cameras lying around unused?
Dodo’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs-funded Tesito project supports forest conservation in The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. Its partner, the Gambian Ministry of Environment, is in need of equipment for its field work.
In particular, working GPS devices, smartphones and digital cameras are needed. In addition, backpacks and rucksacks are useful for local authorities in the field.

Elokuussa Jiffarongin viljelijänaiset kokoontuivat jälleen uuteen ruoanjalostuskoulutukseen.
He halusivat kerrata chilikastikkeen ja dukulan valmistusta. Dukula on perinteinen gambialainen viljasekoitus, jota syödään usein aamupalaksi ja annetaan vauvoille. 🥣
Koulutuksessa chilikastike valmistettiin alusta loppuun: tuoreet chilit lajiteltiin ja soseutettiin, ja lopuksi kastike sekoitettiin ja keitettiin. Naiset tekivät jokaisen vaiheen itse. 🤲
Koulutusta veti maatalouskouluttaja Lamin Nyabally yhdessä avustajansa Olie Gayen kanssa, ja mukana oli FFHC:n hankepäällikkö Abdou Karim Badjie.
Tuoreesta sadosta valmistetut kastikepurkit vähentävät sadonkorjuun jälkeistä hävikkiä ja mahdollistavat myynnin ympäri vuoden. Pian viljelijät alkavat myydä näitä tuotteita myös Dumbutoon rakenteilla olevalla kioskilla. 💪

In August, another food processing training was organized for the women farmers in Jiffarong.
They wanted to refresh their skills in making pepper sauce and dukula, a traditional Gambian grain mix often eaten for breakfast and given to babies. 🥣
During the training, participants prepared pepper sauce from start to finish, from sorting and blending the fresh peppers to mixing and cooking the sauce. Every step was done by the women themselves, hands-on. 🤲
The training was led by agricultural trainer Lamin Nyabally and his assistant Olie Gaye, together with FFHC's Project Manager Abdou Karim Badjie.
Turning fresh produce into jars of sauce helps farmers reduce post-harvest losses and sell their harvests year-round. Also, soon they can start selling these products in the Dumbuto solar kiosk. 💪

🇬🇲 Gambian metsähallinnon edustajat opettelevat valmistelemaan aineistoja segmentointia varten GRASS GIS -ohjelmalla, tutustumaan maailmanlaajuisiin metsien seurantaan soveltuviin aineistoihin, hyödyntämään metsien seurantamenetelmiä sekä tehostamaan karttojen tuotantoprosesseja luonnonsuojelua tukevien karttojen laatimiseksi.
🇬🇼🇸🇳 Guinea-Bissaun ja Senegalin osallistujat puolestaan kehittävät QGIS-ohjelman perustaitojaan. Koulutuksessa käsitellään muun muassa karttasymboleita, QGIS-projektien luomista ja muokkaamista, karttojen tulostamista, rasteriaineistojen georeferointia sekä GPS-laitteista saatavan tiedon tuomista ohjelmaan.
Koulutus vahvistaa käytännön paikkatieto-osaamista ja alueellista yhteistyötä sekä tukee metsien seurannan kehittämistä Länsi-Afrikassa.🌍

Again this year, Manondroala, an NGO from Madagascar, is providing GIS training to environmental professionals from Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal. 💻 🇲🇬
This year, environmental authorities working in Senegal’s Niokolo-Koba area are taking part in the training for the first time.🙌🏼
🇬🇲 Participants from Forestry Department of Gambia are learning to prepare data for segmentation using GRASS GIS, explore global datasets for forest monitoring, apply forest monitoring methods and improve mapping workflows to create maps that support conservation efforts.
🇬🇼🇸🇳 Participants from Guinea-Bissau and Senegal are developing their foundational QGIS skills, including map symbology, creating and editing projects, printing maps, georeferencing raster data and importing GPS data.
The training supports the development of practical GIS skills and regional cooperation to strengthen forest monitoring across West Africa.🌍
EKOenergyn rahoittama aurinkokioski Dumbutossa valmistuu!
Iloisia uutisia Dumbutosta! Haluamme jakaa jälleen kuulumisia rakennustyömaalta, jossa työt etenevät hyvin meneillään olevasta sadekaudesta huolimatta.
Rakennuksen runko ja katto ovat nyt paikoillaan, ja rakennus alkaa saada lopullisen muotonsa. Kioskissa on kaksi erillistä huonetta, sisäänkäynti, sisäovi ja myyntiluukku. Rakennuksen ympärille on lisäksi rakennettu katettu kulkuväylä betonilattialla. Jäljellä oleviin rakennustöihin kuuluvat katon sisäpinnan viimeistely ja rakennuksen maalaus.
Kun kioski on valmis, on seuraavana vuorossa aurinkojärjestelmän ja sähkökaluston asentaminen. Tämän jälkeen kioski kalustetaan ja valmistellaan käyttöä varten.
Samalla valmistaudutaan kioskin tulevaan toimintaan. Kioskille muodostetaan paikallinen komitea, jonka jäsenet koulutetaan aurinkojärjestelmän ylläpitoon. Näin halutaan varmistaa kioskin kestävä käyttö ja vahvistaa paikallista omistajuutta.

The EKOenergy funded solar kiosk in Dumbuto is getting closer to completion!
We’re happy to share another update from the construction site in Dumbuto, where work on the community solar kiosk is progressing well, despite the ongoing rainy season.
The main structure and roofing are now in place, and the building is taking its final shape. The kiosk has two rooms, an entrance, an internal access door and a vending window. A covered corridor with a concreted floor has also been constructed around the building. The remaining construction work includes finalizing the ceiling and painting the building.
Once the building is ready, the next step will be the installation of the solar system and electrical equipment. The kiosk will then be furnished and prepared for use.
At the same time, preparations are underway for the kiosk’s future operation. A local committee will be formed and trained in solar system maintenance, helping to ensure the sustainable use and local ownership of the kiosk.

A few months ago, Tesito’s Agriculture Extension Worker, Lamin Nyabally, participated in a training in Haikou City, China, on food industry value chains. 🇨🇳
The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO) brought together a delegation from The Gambia to gain insight into agricultural technology and supply chains. 🌍🌾
Organised by the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS), the training focused on the development of the tropical fruit industry chain in developing countries. 🍍🥭
Lamin took part in field visits to tropical fruit production areas, learning about local production and processing technologies, as well as classroom seminars on the production and processing of fruits including mango, pineapple, avocado, litchi, star fruit, orange, banana, pear and cocoa. 👨🌾🍌
We look forward to sharing this knowledge and adapting new cultivation and processing techniques in The Gambia! 🇬🇲
