Dodo is a Finnish environmental NGO. Dodo addresses environmental issues in community, we embrace complexity and figuring things out together. From the dining table, in the metro tunnel or on an adventure holiday, there is always a way to participate in addressing global environmental issues.

Dodo’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs-funded Tesito project supports forest conservation in The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. Its partner, the Gambian Ministry of Environment, is in need of equipment for its field work.
In particular, working GPS devices, smartphones and digital cameras are needed. In addition, backpacks and rucksacks are useful for local authorities in the field.

Dodo has its own stand at the Market of Opportunities in Kattilahalli (in the central aisle near the cafeteria). The stand will be distributing seedlings, information about the activities and how to get involved! The Action weekend in Oulu is about to start — and this time we focus on direct action!
Keep your eyes peeled for some sneak peeks in Dodo`s IG stories during the upcoming days! A more comprehensive overview of the weekend available later on Dodo`s website and on the social medias.
The Action weekend will bring together people from all around Finland – to share ideas, skills and useful knowledge to bring back home. This will happen:
❤️🔥 in workshops, facilitated by a group of people who are well equipped with some new, inspiring and effective ideas and plenty of know-how!
❤️🔥 by meeting and spending lovely time with like-minded people interested in civic activism and in creating a better world
❤️🔥 and by looking together into how (and why) direct action looks like in different places around the world.
With all this are hoping to give the participants a better idea of their own possibilities in taking action and finding agency in the civic society, but also to reflect on privilege and the possibilities and reasons behind taking actions. Amongst the new connections, skills and obtained knowledge, we hope the participants will leave home with sensations of hope, togetherness, creativity and inspiration — to disseminate forwards.
❤️🔥 Towards Action is a project for 16-29 year olds and is being run in Finnish and English. The project is a youth project co-funded by the European Union

Hämärän tullen-opintopiirin viimeinen osa, Globaali solidaarisuus ensi keskiviikkona!
Opintopiirin kolmannella (ja viimeisellä) kerralla tarkastelemme globaalia solidaarisuustoimintaa, sen käyttämiä poliittisia keinoja ja suhdetta suoraan toimintaan. Keskusteluun liittyvät kaksi vierasta Riseup4Rojava -liikkeestä, joka keskittyy solidaarisuustoimintaan Rojavan, Kurdien itsehallinnollisen alueen, puolesta.
Pohdimme yhdessä vieraiden kanssa, mitä keinoja solidaarisuustoiminta käyttää ja miksi, mitä on poliittinen paine ja minkälaisia erilaisia mielenosoituskulttuureja on ollut olemassa. Minkälaisia toiminnan piirin skaaloja voimme hahmottaa ja millä tavoin paikallinen yhdistyy kansainväliseen ja kansainvälinen paikalliseen? Tule pohtimaan näitä ja paljon muita teorian ja käytännön koukeroita yhdessä!

Welcome to the Urban Dinner event on 6th of May. We are cooking together a feast out of waste food ingredients, brewing our own kombucha and working in the greenhouse! 🥗🌏
After the dinner we will warm up and get ready for the World Village Festival and try out a participatory drawing technique through which we will map the world around us. Through the drawings we will create a discussion about how we imagine and see the world. 🥗🌏

Jiffarongin kasvimaalla on monia sitruunapuita, jotka on alun perin istutettu elokuussa 2022. 🌱🍋
Ensimmäinen kuva on otettu istuttamisen jälkeen, ja toisessa kuvassa on sama taimi tammikuussa 2025. 🌳
Kasvimaalla kasvavat sitruunapuut ovat tärkeitä maaperän laadun, mutta myös ruokaturvan ja puutarhan toiminnan kestävyyden kannalta. ♻️
Tänä vuonna Tesito vastaanotti Symbioosi ry luonnonsuojeluapurahan uusien sitruunapuiden istuttamiseen Tesiton kasvimaan ympärille. Aidan viereen istutetut puut muodostavat elävän aidan, joka suojaa kasvimaata sadekauden myrskyiltä. ⛈️🌪️
Lisäksi puut alkavat muutaman vuoden päästä tuottamaan runsaasti sitruunoita, jotka viljelijänaiset yhdessä myyvät. Myyntivoitoilla he pystyvät rahoittamaan kasvimaan ylläpitokustannukset. 💰

Jiffarong vegetable garden tree nursery has many lemon trees, which were planted in August 2022. 🌱🍋
The first picture shows the seedling just planted, and in the second picture it’s all grown in January 2025. 🌳
Lemon trees growing in the vegetable garden are important for the soil quality, but also for the food security and garden sustainability. ♻️
This year, Tesito received a grant from Symbioosi ry to plant new lemon trees around the Tesito garden. Planted next to the fence, the trees are going to form a live fence to protect the garden from the rainy season storms. ⛈️🌪️
Also, producing plenty lemons in a few years, they are collectively sold by the women farmers, and with the profit from the sales, farmers are able to finance the maintenance costs of the garden. 💰

Viime talvena FFHC asensi Dumbuton metsäasemalle neljä paneelia ja kaksi akkua EKOenergy ecolabel rahoittamana. Asemalla oli myös joitakin vanhoja rikkinäisiä paneeleja, jotka FFHC:n Lamin Nyabally pystyi myös korjaamaan. 🛠️☀️
Kun Dodon hankepäällikkö Sanni vieraili asemalla, metsäosaston virkamies Jola Bojang kertoi hänelle, millä tavoin paneelien asennus on parantanut heidän asemansa toimintaa. Ennen asennusta Dumbuton metsäasemalla ei ollut ollenkaan sähköjä. 🔋
Yksi eduista on se, että ulkovalojen ansiosta käärmeet eivät enää häiritse heitä yöllä. Lisäksi he voivat nyt ladata puhelimia ja tietokoneita, joita tarvitaan raportointiin ja datan keräämiseen.🐍💡💻
EKOenergian ansiosta aurinkojärjestelmän asennus on parantanut sekä aseman että Dumbuton asukkaiden vedensaantia. 🚰
Noin 2500 Dumbuton kylän asukasta käyttää aseman porakaivoa kotitalouskäyttöön ja juomavetenä kotieläimille. Lisäksi aurinkojärjestelmä pumppaa vettä metsäaseman taimitarhaan, joka tarjoaa taimia ympäröiviin kyliin. 🌱💧

Last winter, FFHC installed four panels and two batteries to Dumbuto forest station, funded by EKOenergy. The station also had some old non-functioning panels, that Lamin Nyabally from FFHC was able to fix. 🛠️☀️
When Dodo Project Manager Sanni visited the station, Jola Bojang, forestry department officer, told her how the installation has improved their operations. Previosly Dumbuto forest station did not have any form of electricity. 🔋
One of the benefits is that since they have light outside, snakes no longer disturb them at night. Also, now they can charge their laptops and phones, which they do reporting and data collection with.💡🐍💻
Thanks to EKOenergy, solar system installation has enhanced water supply for both Dumbuto community members and the station.🚰
Approximately 2500 community members of Dumbuto use the borehole of the station for household use and for domestic animals. The solar system also pumps the water to the forest station tree nursery, which provides seedlings for the surrounding communities.🌱💧

Jiffarongin viljelijänaisilta kerätyn datan perusteella niiden keskimääräisten kuukausien määrä, joina perheellä oli riittävästi ruokaa, nousi kuudesta (2023) kymmeneen (2024). 👏🏼
Tämä on hieno tulos huolimatta siitä, että viime sadekauden rankat myrskyt aiheuttivat paljon vahinkoa kasvimaalla ja neljännes sadosta menetettiin. 📉

Based on the data collected from the Tesito farmer women in Jiffarong, the average amount of food secure months rise from 6 (2023) to 10 (2024) in a year. 👏🏼
This is a great result despite the heavy rainy season storm causing a lot of damage to the garden last summer, and a quarter of the harvest being lost. 📉
It’s interesting to note that onion was still the most popular vegetable to be cultivated in the Tesito garden (55,7%), and after that sorrel (19,3%). Third place goes to tomato (10,2%). 🧅🍅
Dry season harvest is currently taking place, and as you can see from the picture, onion was definitely harvested the most. 🪣
