Dodo is a Finnish environmental NGO. Dodo addresses environmental issues in community, we embrace complexity and figuring things out together. From the dining table, in the metro tunnel or on an adventure holiday, there is always a way to participate in addressing global environmental issues.
It’s important for us to come up with new solutions and cooperate even with unexpected allies. Here at Dodo, we aim to avoid unnecessary confrontations and examine environmental issues widely from different viewpoints. Subscribe to the infoletter.

COMPILATION DIRECT ACTION 2/2
Spring 2025
The Action weekend, Oulu
The Action weekend summarised only into 10 pictures! A longer, more comprehensive post about the weekend on Dodo’s website now, link in the bio!
The third Action Weekend took place in Oulu, Finland, 16-18 May — providing 20 young people from all over Finland a lovely opportunity to learn, discuss and come together to explore direct action and its possibilities. At the heart of the weekend were activities that invited people to dive into the world of direct action, civic activism, climate and human rights issues from different perspectives, encouraging agency and exploring new forms of action.
The programme included reflecting together on definitions and forms of direct action, exploring the role of activist art of today, learning about building movements, people power and communal change, the basics of effective action communication and effective action planning, and a movie night to see action in different forms and contexts around the world. The chant workshop by the sea highlighted the power of voice and collective action, communal meals brought us together to pause, oh and sauna and the walks in nature, resting and napping… A huge variety of things came together during our weekend – but most importantly the people, space for learning and for newness, and the desire to enable change<3
All workshops were designed with the participants in mind, together with the experts who were facilitating the workshops. All the content of the weekend was put together into a handbook, which helped participants to plan their own participation and tailor it to their needs and mood.
The weekend provided a space for relaxation, community building and new friendships. People together created a warm, inspiring and inspiring atmosphere. We hope that the weekend made those who attended hungry for knowledge and ready to deepen their skills even further. Thank you to everyone who was part of this – you made it an unforgettable weekend!
This event was part of the Towards Action project, a civic activism-oriented youth project, which is co-funded by the European Union.

DIRECT ACTION / COMPILATION 1/2
Spring 2025
"When dusk falls” study group
This Spring`s study group consisted of three sessions, which all took place in Helsinki. The discussion was supported by the book “Suoraa toimintaa – Autonomiset liikkeet Suomessa 1986-2016” by Anton Monti and Pontus Purokuru. Each session addressed topical issues with the help of expert guests – discussing, questioning and exploring the issues together.
I
Autonomous spaces
(pictures 2 and 3)
Together we observed the urban space, occupations and the meanings of different spaces, reflecting on historical events and some current phenomena. The discussion involved a person who was involved in the Orange occupations in the 90s, and a person who is currently active in occupation and community centre activities. Together, we considered how self-determined spaces are the key for emergence of culture, forming community and maybe even a new way of organising society.
II
Action for Life
(pictures 4 and 5)
In this session we learned about the animal rights movements and their actions, the legitimacy and possible risks of direct action and speciesism. What does it mean to act directly when the lives of others are at stake? This time our guest was a long-time activist of Oikeutta eläimille.
III
Global solidarity
(picture 6)
The last session was dedicated to global solidarity movements and means of political pressure. How does local action relate to global issues? Can we influence what is happening elsewhere? We discussed with activists in global solidarity movements, exploring different forms of political pressure and influence and the diversity of means.
The study circle created an important space for learning together about direct action – it was also a place for new kinds of debates and critical reflections. It offered perspectives on the history, present and future of direct action. We would like to thank all participants and our lovely guests!
A more comprehensive look into these and other activities of this Spring on Dodo`s website soon!
These events were a part of the Towards Action project, which is a youth project co-funded by The European Union.

Hi! I’m Mathilda! 1/3
I’m studying my masters in urban studies in Brussels, but came to my home city Helsinki to do an internship at Dodo. I’m interested in grassroot urban movements, discussion and discourse about public space and food production in cities. At Dodo, I’ve mainly been working with the Growing Beauty project, helping with the design process, visualizing the ideas and starting off the construction phase as well as contacting various artists who could help out with the projects. I’ve also been cooking at the urban dinners and editing the infoletter. I wanted to learn how smaller organisations work, as they speak to me more than getting lost in big offices and a mass of people. Grassroot change and action as well as environmental topics in the city are important to me and this is why Dodo felt like a good place to come. And was!
Hi, I`m Livia! 2/3
I volunteer with Dodo, because I`m passionate about protecting the environment and learning more about living sustainably. I`m really happy to be part of the wonderful team and contributing to something that matters. Taking care of the plants and gaining more knowledge about them is one of my favourite things. I am grateful to make this experience in Helsinki. This city is fabulous and I love the combination of nature and spectacular architecture. I love to wonder around and discover all these cute places. I can`t wait to see what adventures await.
Hi, I`m Manon! 3/3
Dodo`s new intern. I`m from Toulouse, France, where I`m studying a design and crafts diploma specializing in social innovation. If you`re wondering what all this means, it`s a design and crafts diploma that focuses on innovation for people, creating to respond to social needs. Acting for the environment, disabled people, equality and equity among others. We work for small structures. To help them become more accessible. Our methods are user-centered, we do field work and the experts are the people who use these places, which gives us a better understanding of the environment and habits. Also in this diploma we touch every part of design, object, events, graphic design, fashion… That allows us to have a better answer in all our projects.

A-C-T-I-O-N!
The Action weekend in Oulu is about to start — and this time we focus on direct action!
Keep your eyes peeled for some sneak peeks in Dodo`s IG stories during the upcoming days! A more comprehensive overview of the weekend available later on Dodo`s website and on the social medias.
The Action weekend will bring together people from all around Finland – to share ideas, skills and useful knowledge to bring back home. This will happen:
❤️🔥 in workshops, facilitated by a group of people who are well equipped with some new, inspiring and effective ideas and plenty of know-how!
❤️🔥 by meeting and spending lovely time with like-minded people interested in civic activism and in creating a better world
❤️🔥 and by looking together into how (and why) direct action looks like in different places around the world.
With all this are hoping to give the participants a better idea of their own possibilities in taking action and finding agency in the civic society, but also to reflect on privilege and the possibilities and reasons behind taking actions. Amongst the new connections, skills and obtained knowledge, we hope the participants will leave home with sensations of hope, togetherness, creativity and inspiration — to disseminate forwards.
❤️🔥 Towards Action is a project for 16-29 year olds and is being run in Finnish and English. The project is a youth project co-funded by the European Union

Hämärän tullen-opintopiirin viimeinen osa, Globaali solidaarisuus ensi keskiviikkona!
